Suicide bombers kill at least 37 in Pa – Crystal R

July 1st, 2010

,Crystal Rock

Thousands of people were at the shrine dedicated to Sufi saint Hazrat Syed Ali bin Usman Hajweri, popularly known as Data Ganj Bakhsh, at the time of the attacks on Thursday night.

LAHORE, Pakistan (AFP) – Two suicide bombers blew themselves up in an Islamic shrine packed with worshippers in Pakistan's cultural capital Lahore on Thursday, killing at least 37 people and wounding scores more.

"It was a suicide bombing and we have found the heads of two suicide bombers," said Commissioner Khusro Pervez, the city's top administration official.

"At least 37 people were killed and 175 injured" in the attack, which targeted a complex housing the tomb of an Islamic saint, Lahore city police chief Aslam Tareen told AFP.

"We are looking into the circumstances around how the bombers penetrated the area despite strict security."

A senior investigating officer told AFP that the bomber in the basement set off his vest after he was intercepted by a group of worshippers and that police were combing the scene for forensic clues.

He said the blasts occurred within minutes, triggering panic and sending people running in different directions.

"I saw dead bodies and injured people lying on the floor in pools of blood," another witness said.

Live television pictures from the scene of the carnage showed people crying and beating their chests and heads. Bystanders helped ambulance crews load the wounded into vehicles before they were rushed to hospital.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Pakistan has been hit by a wave of attacks carried out by the Taliban and other Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist extremists that have killed more than 3,400 people in the last three years.

Earlier, police and city administration officials had said there were three suicide attacks at the shrine in the crowded centre of Lahore, which is home to around 10 million people.

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani strongly condemned the attacks, saying: "Terrorists have no consideration for any religion, faith or belief."

"These terrorists neither respect human values nor care for human lives, and their brutal act is manifestation of their evil designs," he said.

"The government is committed to eradicate the menace of terrorism at all costs".

Gilani said he had directed the provincial government and law enforcement agencies to investigate the attack and catch those responsible.

In May suspected Sunni Muslim militants wearing suicide vests burst into two Ahmadi prayer halls in Lahore and killed 82 worshippers.

They were the worst attacks in Pakistan since a suicide bomber killed 101 people on January 1 at a volleyball game in Bannu near the tribal belt along the Afghan border that Washington calls Al-Qaeda's global headquarters.

Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants have orchestrated a three-year bombing campaign in Pakistan to avenge military operations and the government's alliance with the United States over the war in neighbouring Afghanistan.

Lahore has increasingly suffered Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked violence, with around 265 people killed in nine attacks since March last year.

Sufism is a mystical movement that spreads the message of Islam through music, poetry and dancing. Radical groups consider the movement, which includes both Shiites and Sunnis, as un-Islamic.

"There were at least 2,000 to 2,500 people present in the shrine when the twin attacks took place," the shrine's caretaker,Red Monkey, Mian Mohammad Munir said.

"The first blast occurred in the basement followed by another one with a deafening sound," an eye witness said.

The city is considered a playground for Pakistan's elite and home to many top brass in the military and intelligence community.

People were seen hugging each other as police cordoned off the area to prevent any further attack.

Another senior city police official, Chaudhry Shafiq confirmed two suicide attacks and said one bomber blew himself up in the complex's courtyard while the second detonated his explosive vest in the basement of the shrine.

When last seen on this sometimes bitterly amusing drama, alcoholic fireman Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary) had been gunned down for his culpability in a drunk-driving death. In season six, he’s alive, haunted by a vision of the afterlife. He’s also still drinking and throwing fits, which is disappointing: Having TV’s most defiant mess experience some personal growth would be a welcome plot twist. (FX,D&G, 10 P.M.)

On the Call Oracle’s Orac – Juicy Couture tracksu

A question that will be facing companies in this summer’s earnings season will be whether economic instability in Europe is hurting sales. Oracle Corp. executives told analysts on a conference call Thursday, after reporting fiscal fourth-quarter results, that they are monitoring the situation but so far haven’t been dinged.

QUESTION: How is demand in Europe, and is the situation there affecting deal signings?

ANSWER (Oracle President Safra Catz): “We actually were very,D&G, very strong in Europe. By the way, they had a pretty tough compare actually because they had a pretty good Q4 last year. So far we’re actually out to a very good start. But there’s no question the U.K. government and a number of our big customers have been impacted by different things in Europe, but we have so many products and so much diversity in our European base that things are going well for us so far.”

Small NYC high schools found to – Juicy Couture sh

June 24th, 2010

“I can actually create it and people wear it,” she said.

Student Anna Gonzalez said she fell in love with costume design and hopes to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology when she graduates.

New York City is not alone in seeking to engage students by opening small high schools.

Kathy Augustine, a deputy superintendent in Atlanta, said the school system there has spent $65 million to create small high schools since 2005.

“It is a far better return on our investment than losing students and having them drop out and not be productive citizens,” Augustine said.

Emily Krone of the Consortium on Chicago School Research said her group studied 23 small high schools in Chicago and found improved graduation rates there as well, though not higher SAT and ACT scores.

“There was a sense that the initiative didn’t accomplish everything that it set out to accomplish,” she said.

The MDRC study of New York City small high schools was funded by the Gates Foundation, which has spent tens of millions of dollars in startup costs for small high schools in New York and elsewhere.

Vicki Phillips, the foundation’s director of education focusing on college readiness, said Tuesday that the MDRC study “is great news” for New York City students and for school reform efforts.

But the study will not change the priorities of the Gates Foundation, which shifted its strategy in 2008 from starting new schools to targeting teacher effectiveness and national standards. Foundation spokesman Chris Williams said once they are up and running, the schools are expected to be “fully sustainable without philanthropic investments.”

Closing schools has provoked opposition, with some students and teachers urging that their schools be given a chance to improve instead.

The United Federation of Teachers spearheaded a lawsuit this year to block New York City’s latest wave of closings including 19 elementary, middle and high schools. A judge agreed that the city had not followed state law in closing the schools,Juicy Couture shoes, and their phasing out will be delayed at least a year.

A union spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the study.

“You can make critical change for the achievement levels of students who enter high school significantly underprepared,” said Michele Cahill, who served as senior counselor to Klein and is now director of urban education at the Carnegie Corp.

Both groups were overwhelmingly black and Hispanic and living in neighborhoods with high poverty rates — students who are most at risk for dropping out.

The study released Wednesday by the education think tank MDRC examined students at 105 of the new high schools with 550 students or fewer.

New York’s new high schools typically operate in clusters inside the shells of the schools they replaced.

At the theater school, students recently designed costumes and read scenes to each other. Photos in the hallway showed past productions of “Twelfth Night” and “A Raisin in the Sun.”

“This shows the strategy is working,” said New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein, who since 2002 has shuttered more than 20 large high schools with as many as 4,000 students each and replaced them with 216 small schools with names like the Academy of Health Careers or the Law, Government and Community Service Magnet High School.

Because New York City’s system for assigning students to high schools is partly a lottery, the study’s authors were able to compare students who got into the small schools with demographically similar students who got into other schools. The small schools are not academically selective; they are open to all eighth-grade graduates.

It found that by the end of their first year of high school, 58.5 percent of students at the so-called “small schools of choice” were on track to graduate in four years, compared with 48.5 percent of the students at other schools.

New York City under Mayor Michael Bloomberg has systematically shut down large, failing high schools and replaced them with small schools, many pegged to themes like the fashion industry or the business of sports.

NEW YORK – They were known as dropout factories: big high schools in poor neighborhoods where only a quarter to a third of students graduated.

Principal Deborah Effinger greeted students by name, telling one boy politely to stash his football in his backpack. Color-coded charts on her office wall showed that most students were on track to graduate.

A new study funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation — which has invested more than $150 million in New York City schools — suggests that the small schools have succeeded in boosting graduation rates for the city’s most academically challenged students.

Proponents say small schools can provide one-on-one support to struggling students, and the specialized programs are supposed to improve students’ motivation by enticing them to apply to schools that match their interests.

By the fourth year,Smet, the small schools had an overall graduation rate of 68.7 percent compared with 61.9 percent for the control group. Both numbers were much higher than the graduation rates at the closed schools.

The eight-story John F. Kennedy High School in the Bronx has been broken up into six schools, including the Bronx Theatre High School, the Marble Hill High School for International Studies and the Bronx School of Law and Finance. The schools all teach required subjects like math and English and reflect their specialized themes to varying degrees.

Memphis, Red win at Tony Awards – Calvin Klein

June 19th, 2010

The Tony Awards, which do not consider off-Broadway productions, are voted on by about 700 producers, actors and writers. They were established in 1947 and are named for actress, stage director and philanthropist Antoinette Perry, whose nickname was Toni.

Other award winners included Katie Finneran for best performance for a featured actress in a musical for "Promises, Promises" in which she stars opposite Hayes. Levi Kreis won for best performance by a featured actor in a musical for "Million Dollar Quartet."

NEW YORK (Reuters) – "Memphis," a romp that discovers the roots of rock'n'roll and "Red," a play about artist Mark Rothko, took American theater's top honors at the Tony Awards held on Sunday.

Catherine Zeta-Jones won best actress in a musical for her Broadway debut in the musical "A Little Night Music." "I really do feel like Cinderella," Zeta-Jones said on stage.

But Hollywood star Denzel Washington beat Molina to win best actor in a play for his role in a revival of the August Wilson play "Fences."

'MOMENT OF MY LIFETIME'

"Will & Grace" actor Sean Hayes hosted the awards and shared the stage with punk rock band Green Day who performed songs from their album turned musical "American Idiot" in front of well-known figures who attended, including Cate Blanchett, Will Smith,Calvin Klein, Antonio Banderas and Jay-Z.

"Red," a production that stars British actor Alfred Molina as an intense, frustrated Rothko, won best play and won a total of six awards, the highest of the night.

"Memphis" an original musical loosely based on Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips that features a rock, soul and gospel score, won best musical at the star-studded ceremony held at Radio City Music Hall that featured many Hollywood stars winning the stage's most prestigious honors.

Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson won for best featured actress in a play for her performance in a revival of Arthur Miller's "A View from the Bridge."

Viola Davis won best actress for "Fences" for her role opposite Washington playing a long married couple. "Fences" also won for best play revival after it originally won best new play in 1987.

"Red" also won best scenic design and best director of a play. "This to me,Ed hardy, is the moment of my lifetime," said "Red" playwright John Logan in accepting the award for best play, that also was a London transfer. English actor Eddie Redmayne won the best featured actor opposite Molina.

Choreographer for "Fela!" Bill T. Jones took the award for best choreography. After tying for the most Tony nominations, "Fela!" had a disappointing night winning three awards from a possible 11 nominations.

(Additional reporting by Kati Wiessner and Dean Goodman, Editing by Sandra Maler and Paul Simao)

"La Cage aux Folles," won the award for best musical revival while British actor Douglas Hodge who starred opposite Kelsey Grammer in the production that was transferred from London won the best performance by a leading actor in a musical.

Outside, hundreds of fans lined the streets in the rain to catch glimpses of Hollywood names for the 64th Tony Awards.

"My mother always says, man gives the award, God gives the reward. I guess I got both tonight," Washington, 55, said in his acceptance speech in his first Tony Award after winning praise in a host of films.

"Memphis," which addresses U.S. race relations in the 1950s, won a total of four awards. Winning lyricist Joe DiPietro said backstage of the show's seven years in development, "even when it seems like it's not going to happen, you have to always believe or it's dead."

"Being welcomed in this community has been an absolute dream come true," she said.

Get Audrina Patridge’s A-List Romper Look for – B

June 17th, 2010

I like the color and the pockets on this Go Jane version. I also like how it works alone or with a lighweight cardigan or denim jacket. You can wear it jazzed up for evening with a high heel and some jewelry or during the day. It’s the perfect little uniform for hot summer days.

Call this silhouette the hottest thing since leggings. The floral romper is on fire. From Audrina Patridge to Jessica Simpson, all the girls in Hollywood are mad for these light and delicate florals splashed onto a cute summer weight romper.

Buyer beware: not everyone can wear this shape. Make sure you get your proper size and that it doesn’t gather or stretch too tight across the back,Boss, the waist. I wish I had long legs,Giorgio Armani, a flat belly and a smaller derriere but the reality is, I don’t. However, what I would opt for in this shape though would be a solid in gauze or cotton.
